  Get a Grip: Grip Tips

Grips are a very important aspect of the game. I use two basic grips—the power and control grip, but there are many variations of these two. When I drive, I use what is called a power grip. Basically, I tuck all my fingers underneath the rim of the disc (with the finger pads pressed to the inside wall of the rim). I put my thumb mostly towards the center of the disc’s flight plate because I feel like it gives me a balance of power and control over the angle of the disc’s nose. I will use that grip for my drives, mid-ranges, and some of my longer approaches (roughly 125 feet and out). The power grip creates an explosive “hit” within the hand (the disc should rip out of the hand) which will transcribe to more spin, more speed and thus more distance. Once I am within 125 feet of the target, I use what is considered to be a control grip. For that grip, I just put my index finger on the outside edge of the rim, and the other three fingers are fanned on the bottom of the disc. The fanning of the fingers allows me to feel and control the angle of the disc when I am attempting a touch shot or a putt. The fanning of the fingers spreads out the power in the grip allowing the “hit” of the release to be less. The theory behind this grip is when I go to release the disc that last point to touch the disc is my index finger. With a nice smooth release and follow through, the disc should travel directly and effortlessly to the target.
